How to Increase Your Customers’ Average Order Value

It’s no secret that upselling is one of the best ways to increase a buyer’s average order value…

But it’s also one of the more robust strategies to get right.

Upsell too often or too early, and you risk annoying potential buyers, or worse, nudging them, inadvertently, to leave your site before completing their order. Upsell too little or too late, and they’re unlikely to get the most out of their buying experience.

A better approach, based on our data, is to offer the right products to the right prospects at the right time.

In this recipe, I’ll share how to increase your buyer’s average order value without annoying visitors or coming across too “salesy.”

Step 1: Create an Increase Product Sales Campaign

First, click the campaign below:

Step 2: Customize to Your Preference

Next, change the campaign copy and image to reflect the items you offer. As a general rule of thumb, we recommend offering products that complement those the viewer is buying.

For instance, if the shopper is viewing men’s beard oil, you can trigger your campaign to promote softener, shampoo, or other similar men’s toiletries.

Next, I’ll update the URLs of the pages I want to send visitors to:

Finally, I’ll update the Teaser copy and move to the “Display Settings”:

Note: You can easily integrate, ShopifyClerkHello Retail, or Raptor to insert product recommendations into your campaigns. To learn more, read our guide on product recommendation popups.

Step 3: Choose Where to Show Your Campaign

In “Display Settings,” choose:

  1. When you want to trigger the campaign (Triggers)
  2. Who you want to see it (e.g., new visitors, returning visitors, etc.);
  3. Where you want the campaign show.

We recommend choosing the “URL Contains” option as doing so will give you more control over which page(s) visitors see the campaign.

Returning to our beard oil example, you might add “/products/beard-oil” to the condition so that your campaign shows on ALL pages under that category, for example:

Once you add the page(s) you want to show your campaign on, save your campaign and that’s it!

You now have a campaign that will recommend prospects timely, relevant products, meaning higher orders and greater profits.
